TYPES OF ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS
Essential fatty acids fall into two major categories: omega-3 and omega-6. There are many fatty acids in each of these groups.
You can think of each of these families as an assembly line. The fatty acids at the top, LA and ALA, are the starting ingredients. Your body then turns on the assembly line and manufactures other fatty acids from them. In the omega-6 family, the body turns LA into gamma linolenic acid (GLA) and then into dihomo-gamma-linoleic acid (DHGLA). In the omega-3 family, the body starts with alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and makes eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and do-cosahexaenoic acid (DHA) from it.
You can also eat foods that already contain these essential fatty acids. EPA and DHA are found in fish oil made from cold water fish such as salmon, mackerel, and herring. GLA is found in high concentrations in evening primrose oil, borage oil, and black currant oil.
There has been an enormous amount of scientific interest in the medicinal properties of each of these fatty acids. EPA and DHA may reduce the risk of heart attacks. GLA is used to treat symptoms of diabetes, breast soreness that occurs with menstrual periods, and eczema.
