STRUCTURE OF INTERNAL NOSE: NASAL SEPTUM
The two-thirds of your nose that you don't see when you look in the mirror is a very intricately constructed cavity placed in your skull between your brain cavity above and your oral or mouth cavity below. It's larger than you might think: its upper boundary begins at the root of the nose and extends straight back 10 to 12 centimeters, or 4 to 5 inches.
Your nasal cavity is divided vertically by a wall, the nasal septum, running roughly down the middle throughout the entire depth of the cavity. The septum is composed of bone and cartilage and is actually a conglomeration of some nine separate bones.
Not everyone's septum is straight like a wall dividing two rooms. Some bend or curve slightly to the right or left side of the nasal cavity, deviations that normally cause no problems. If it curves too much, however, the septum is said to be deviated and can partially or completely block one side of the nose. Almost everyone has some deviation of their nasal septum, but only about 15 to 20 percent of the people in the United States have enough deviation to cause symptoms: one-sided nasal blockage or stuffiness, or increased postnasal drainage.
