STRUCTURE OF INTERNAL NOSE: LATERAL OR SIDE WALLS OF THE NASAL CAVITY

You can't see the right or left side walls of the nose well by just looking into your nostrils. Doctors have to use special instruments to see this part of your nose. The side walls of the nose are formed by the cheek bones. Three oblong extensions, called conchae or turbinates, arise from the side wall and form its most prominent landmarks. The smallest and highest placed conchae is the superior turbinate, next in size and location is the middle turbinate, and the largest and the one closest to the floor of the nose is the inferior turbinate.
If you tilt your head slightly backwards and peek into your nostrils, you can see pink fingertip-like structures on the right and left side wall of your nose. These are the front tips of the inferior turbinate. That's really about all you can see of these turbinates without using special instruments.
Each of your turbinates curves downward away from the side wall in such a manner as to create a space between itself and the side wall. These spaces are very important, as they control the flow of air into and through your nose and ensure close contact of air with the mucous membrane lining of the nose. Each space, or meatus (an anatomical term for space), is named for the turbinate causing its formation. Thus, the superior meatus lies under the superior turbinate, the middle meatus is located under the middle turbinate, and the inferior meatus is under the inferior turbinate. The largest and most important of the spaces is the middle meatus. It is the most important because of its size, because it does much of the work of the nose, and because it is the space into which three major sinus cavities (frontal, maxillary, and ethmoid sinuses) drain. The other sinuses and the nasolacrimal duct drain into the other spaces.
The nasolacrimal duct is the tube through which your body removes excess tears from your eyes. Tears are constantly made by your tear glands, and those that aren't required to lubricate your eyes must be removed; otherwise, you'd look as if you were crying all the time. Your nasolacrimal duct works like this: Excess tears are drawn into a sac-like structure between the corner of your eye and the root of your nose. When you blink, the sac is compressed and the tears are squeezed out of the sac into the nasolacrimal duct. They drain into the nose in the front portion of the inferior meatus.
The maxillary sinuses ("sinus" is another anatomical name for a space or cavity), frontal sinuses, and part of the ethmoid sinuses drain into the nose through a long groove-like opening toward the front of the middle meatus. The remaining ethmoids drain into the superior meatus. The sphenoid sinuses open into your nose via a groove-like opening just above the superior meatus.
This close relationship between your nose and sinuses makes it easy to see how your sinuses can become infected when your nose is infected, or how your nose can become infected when your sinuses are infected.
One other opening in the lateral wall of your nose that you should know about is the auditory tube opening. Through this opening your middle ear connects to your nose by a tube called the eustachian tube. Note that the auditory tube opening is located just behind the inferior turbinate, where the nose opens into the pharynx. Given this location, it is easy to understand how the ears can become infected when the nose is infected.
