STRUCTURE OF YOUR NOSE: MUCOUS MEMBRANE LINING OF THE NOSE
The cells predominantly found in the lining of the nose are called pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelial cells. These cells are tall, like columns, and have hair-like projections called cilia extending from their tops. These ciliated cells are covered by a blanket of mucus produced by various glands and cells within the lining membrane. This mucus blanket has two layers: an upper, sticky, chunky layer called the gel (for gelatinous) layer and a lower, thin, watery layer called the sol (for solution), which is just thick enough to cover the cilia projecting upward from the lining cells.
The lining membrane of your nose contains a variety of other cells that protect you from noxious agents and infection. They also can participate in allergic reactions.
Underneath the lining cells is a rich supply of nerve tissue, lymphatics, and blood vessels. This supply is especially abundant over the three turbinates. This portion of the nasal membrane is "erectile"; it actually functions very similarly to penile tissue in its ability to fill and empty with blood and to distend when engorged with blood. This response is most prominent in that portion of the lining membrane covering the turbinates, and is most pronounced over the inferior turbinate.
