STRESS REDUCTION: CALM DOWN WITH KAVA
A common side effect of chronic stress is anxiety. Patients with anxiety are often given prescriptions for tranquilizers or other medications. These drugs have a long list of side effects, including impaired concentration and memory, loss of coordination, sleep disturbances, and depression. Instead, it’s recommend that my patients take kava (Piper meihysticum) for anxiety. The roots of this South Pacific plant contain kavalactones, which act in the deep recesses of the brain to produce feelings of calm and peacefulness. And rather than dulling the mind, kava actually improves concentration and memory. Furthermore, kava is extremely effective in reducing anxiety. In a 1991 study, 58 patients with symptoms of anxiety were divided into two groups. One group was given 100 milligrams of kava three times a day, while the other took a placebo. After four weeks the patients taking the herb had significant reductions in nervousness, heart palpitations, chest pains, dizziness, headaches, and gastrointestinal symptoms, compared with the placebo group.
For anxiety, consider giving kava a try. The suggested dose is 150 milligrams one to six times a day of an extract containing 30 percent kavalactones. Take no more than two capsules every four hours or six capsules in any twenty-four-hour period. Kava should be taken for a maximum of three months, then discontinued for two to four weeks before the cycle is repeated. Kava should not be taken before driving or operating heavy machinery, so it is best taken in the evening. Alcohol, tranquilizers, and other substances that affect the central nervous system should be avoided when taking kava.
