DEEP RELAXATION TO REDUCE STRESS
Deep relaxation is the process of systematically relaxing your body and freeing your mind of busy thoughts. Sit or lie comfortably, preferably alone. Then begin to still your mind and reduce the busy thoughts that tend to dominate your consciousness. If you can't seem to quiet the rush of ideas, don't fight it. Just make a mental note of the thoughts you may want to return to later, and your mind will eventually grow still. Breathe naturally. Your daily commitment to this process will allow you to go deeper and deeper into relaxation. If you feel you need to focus your thoughts to help you relax, as many do, you might try the six-step relaxation exercise described in The Relaxation Response, by Herbert Benson, M.D. Dr. Benson developed this method to help people achieve deep relaxation. I've summarized the six steps for you here:
1. Sit or lie quietly in a comfortable position.
2. Close your eyes.
3. Deeply relax all of your muscles, concentrating on one after the other, beginning with your feet and progressing up your body to your face. Keep all of your muscles relaxed.
4. Breathe through your nose. Become aware of your breathing. As you breathe out, silently repeat the word "one" (or any other word of your choosing, such as "God" or "peace"). Breathe easily and naturally.
5. Continue this relaxing process for 10 to 20 minutes. You may open your eyes to check the time, but do not use an alarm clock. When you finish, remain reclined or seated quietly for a few minutes.
